Study Craft, Motifs, Craft Community; Look into the History of Craft, Culture, Region

Objective of project was to understand the traditional Clay craft practice of Pokhran. The traditional methods and a way making. It helped us to understand how region influences (geographic/ climatic/ folk ) craft and daily practices of the surrounding population. 

About Pokhran

Pokhran is a city located in the states of Rajasthan, India; in district Jaisalmer. 
Pokhran has rich history and folk cultures. 
It is a remote location in the Thar Desert region and served as the test site for India's first underground nuclear weapon detonation. Pokhran is one of the important city in India.

  • Pokhran have maintained the traditional style of craft which has rich aesthetic value of itself.

  • They are still using their traditional techniques consist of geometric patterns tools.

  • The pottery is preserving the culture of Rajasthan by depicting the folk stories and motives on in   the form of decoration.

  • Pokhran pottery is consists of wide range of products including surahi, traditional water bottles with narrow mouth, planters, outdoor seating (stool), tea-light holders, etc.
