Eco-cooling (A Clay Fridge)

Since ancient times, our ancestors were using terracotta to store grains, water and other food-related items. The product is inspired by the people living in rural areas where electricity is not regular; due to this, they cannot use the advanced refrigerators. Another push came when I visited my grandparents, and they were complaining about how fruits became cold when stored in the fridge, creating discomfort during eating.

Eco-Cooling is a clay fridge made using locally available terracotta clay. The fridge functions using terracotta’s natural porosity properties and provides cooling for fruits, vegetables, daily leftovers and milk without using electricity. The Eco-Cooling also provides a space to grow a small bed of micro-greens and sprouts above the water tank. Eco-cooling is suitable for rural as well as urban households. The product has soft curved sides, promoting natural airflow that helps generate cooling on the inside chamber. Product preserves the natural freshness of veggies and fruits for up to 3-4 days. It also maintains the natural humidity of foods.

Once the product loses its functions as a cooling container, it can be converted and reused as a planter or storing container.
